Rotterdam to install barrelling wave-pool on the steigersgracht canal

Residents of rotterdam will soon be able to enjoy a 1.5 meter, artificial 14-second river wave that barrels in the heart of the city.

Scheduled to open june 2015, the RiF010 water sports arena will be built on the steigersgracht canal and will be home to surfers, kayakers, scuba divers and more. The wave-pool will developed by Delft university of technology and will create naturally-purified water inside the canal, replacing unsweetened pond water in the process. According to the organizers, any profit made from the wave will be re-invested in the project such as building the canal its own independent windmill to generate electricity and provide power to the site.
